On painting
"A love of oil paint, and colour theory in general is the drive behind my work. A combination of soft layers and thick impasto areas informs my process — I paint as a means of meditation, as a way of discovering. It demands total mindfulness, to the point that I don't consciously think."
Helen McCullagh
Helen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Cross University. She has taught at the Gallery of Modern Art and her work is held in collections internationally.
In 2015 she was awarded Highly Commended at the Muswellbrook Art Prize — one of Australia’s most prestigious acquisitive prizes.
She works from her studio in North Queensland — between the Atherton Tablelands and Townsville — painting still lifes, botanicals, and quiet interiors with an attention to colour, light, and the slow life of things.
